Expectations vs. Reality

Before joining my internship at Etherlogic Pty Ltd, I expected the experience to mainly focus on improving my technical skills, particularly in backend development and software systems. I believed that most of my work would involve coding tasks under close supervision, with limited responsibility. I also expected a structured environment where tasks would be clearly assigned, and guidance would always be available. My primary goal was to gain practical experience and understand how software development operates in a professional setting.

However, the reality of the internship was more dynamic and challenging than I had anticipated. While I did work on technical tasks such as backend development, data processing, and system maintenance, I was also required to work independently and manage my own workload. As the internship was conducted in a remote and flexible environment, I had to communicate proactively with team members, clarify requirements, and organise my time effectively. Compared to my expectations, the workplace was less structured but offered more opportunities for self-directed learning and problem-solving.

Key Lessons Learned

One of the most important lessons I learned during the internship was the importance of responsibility and professional communication. In a real working environment, tasks are often interconnected, and delays can affect the entire team. I learned to report progress regularly, ask for feedback, and seek clarification when necessary. Another key lesson was the value of adaptability. Technical requirements and project priorities could change quickly, and I needed to adjust my approach accordingly. These lessons were important because they helped me transition from a student mindset to a professional mindset.

Career Direction

After completing my workplace experience, I believe my value proposition to employers lies in my ability to combine technical competence with strong work ethics. I can contribute effectively to backend development, data modelling, and system design while maintaining reliability and attention to detail. I can demonstrate this through my completed internship projects, academic team projects, and documented learning outcomes in my ePortfolio. My experience shows that I am capable of learning new technologies quickly and applying them in practical contexts.

The internship also influenced the type of role I am interested in pursuing. Through hands-on experience, I discovered that I enjoy working on backend systems, databases, and application logic. I am particularly interested in roles that involve system development, data processing, and technical problem-solving. The exposure to industry practices has strengthened my desire to pursue a career as a software engineer, where I can continuously develop my technical skills while contributing to meaningful projects.

Overall, this internship was a valuable learning experience that enhanced my professional confidence, technical ability, and career direction. It has prepared me for future employment and motivated me to continue improving as a software engineering professional.
